Department: Asphalt Plant

Reports To : Plant Superintendent

Status: Exempt

We are seeking a highly experienced and certified Asphalt Lab Manager to oversee all quality control and quality assurance activities for our asphalt materials production and placement in Kentucky. This leadership role requires deep technical expertise, exceptional management skills, and a commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.

Key Qualifications

· Experience: Minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) production, quality control, laboratory operations, and materials testing.

· Kentucky State Certification (Required): Current and valid qualification with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is mandatory. The candidate must possess the following:

1. Superpave Mix Design Technologist (SMDT) certification.
2. Superpave Plant Technologist (SPT) certification.

· Education: Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience and a combination of certifications will be considered.

· Leadership: Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience, including managing, training, and developing laboratory staff.

· Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of KYTC, AASHTO, and ASTM specifications, standards, and test methods.

Core Responsibilities

Laboratory Management & Quality

· Directly supervise all day-to-day laboratory operations, including testing, data analysis, and report generation, ensuring adherence to the KYTC Quality Assurance Program.

· Ensure that all HMA, aggregate, and asphalt binder testing is conducted strictly according to KYTC, AASHTO, and ASTM standards and project specifications.

· Maintain the laboratory's certification and accreditation (e.g., AMRL/AASHTO) by managing internal quality systems, proficiency testing, and preparing for annual audits.

· Oversee the calibration, maintenance, and proper function of all laboratory equipment.

· Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Quality Control (QC) plans and procedures.

Mix Design and Technical Support

· Utilize SMDT certification to perform, submit, adjust, or approve asphalt mix designs in accordance with Kentucky Standard Specifications.

· Utilize SPT certification knowledge to oversee plant operations, production efficiencies, and daily quality control, ensuring materials acceptance by the KYTC.

· Collaborate with plant operations and construction teams to troubleshoot quality issues, analyze non-compliant test results, and implement effective corrective actions.

· Stay current with advancements in asphalt technology and KYTC specifications
