The South Carolina State Museum is a premier cultural institution dedicated to showcasing the rich history, natural history, art, and science of South Carolina. Job Overview The Safety and Security Manager ensures the protection of the museum's visitor, staff, collections, and facilities by overseeing comprehensive safety and security strategies, balance risk management with the museum's mission of accessibility and public engagement. Additional responsibilities include: Oversee daily security functions, including patrols, surveillance, and incident response and provides ongoing feedback; manage security personnel: hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations; ensure coverage for all museum hours, special events, and after-hours activities; work closely with museum leadership, facilities teams, and external agencies to ensure a safe environment for staff and visitors; supplements security officer positions as required to maintain an appropriate level of security for the museum and routinely tours the facility. Maintain and monitor security systems such as CCTV, access control, burglar alarms, fire alarms, and emergency notification systems; coordinate with IT and facilities teams to ensure systems are up-to-date and functioning properly; conduct regular audits of security infrastructure and recommend upgrades as needed; implement emergency response plans for fire, natural disasters, theft, and other threats; lead drills for staff on evacuation procedures and crisis response. Ensure compliance with OSHA, ADA, FERPA, Workers Compensation and other regulations; document incidents and maintain detailed logs and reports for internal and external review; educate staff and volunteers on safety protocols and visitor interaction best practices; work with external agencies including police, fire departments, State Law Enforcement Division, and security vendors. Consult with Exhibits and Collections team to ensure security needs for collections and exhibits moving in and out of the building; supervise building maintenance as it relates to safety and security; identify and mitigate physical risks, such as trip hazards or faulty lighting; oversee third-party service providers. Performs other duties as assigned. Certification by the SC Law enfor4ecement training Council in accordance with state law (23-23-40 At least two-year college degree in a related field At least three years of experience in law enforcement, including two years in a supervisory capacity Managerial, supervisory experience and skills in the protective services Excellent written and verbal communication skills Considerable knowledge of dealing with situations and hazards that could affect the museum. Knowledge of the theory, practices, and techniques of safety, security, and fire protection Proficient computer skills, administrative activities, to include record keeping and reporting. Physically able to access all parts of the museum building and property. Must be sighted and able to hear and communicate on two-way radios. Must have a driver's license.
