Job Description The Ruby on Rails Engineer will build and enhance merchant-facing features for Shopify applications. This role focuses on high-quality Rails development, Shopify app integrations, API work, and scalable product improvements used across a variety of ecommerce environments. The engineer will collaborate with Product, Design, and Engineering teams to deliver performant, reliable features within a Ruby on Rails monolith. Responsibilities Develop new product features and enhancements within a Ruby on Rails monolith. Build and maintain Shopify embedded apps, checkout extensions, and API integrations. Implement Turbo/Hotwire interactions and server-rendered UI updates. Collaborate with Product and Design teams to scope and ship merchant-facing features. Write clean, maintainable, well-tested Rails code using RSpec or similar frameworks. Debug performance issues and optimize application speed, database queries, and caching. Integrate with Shopify APIs, webhooks, and third-party services. Participate in code reviews and contribute to architecture and design discussions. Support production issues and assist with reliability and performance improvements. Hands-on experience building and shipping Shopify apps (embedded apps, App Bridge, Online Store 2.0, or checkout extensions). Strong understanding of server-rendered Rails, controllers, models, and background jobs. Experience with Turbo/Hotwire or similar server-driven UI patterns. Strong API integration experience - REST, webhooks, authentication, and third-party services. Solid database experience (PostgreSQL preferred). Strong automated testing experience (RSpec, Minitest, or equivalent). Ability to work independently in a fast-paced engineering environment. Experience scaling merchant-facing SaaS or high-traffic Rails applications. Background with ecommerce, loyalty, retention, or marketing apps on Shopify. Familiarity with background job systems like Sidekiq and Redis. Performance tuning or caching strategy experience. Light frontend experience (Stimulus, Tailwind, React) for UI enhancements. Contributions to Rails or Shopify developer communities.
