About the Role:

The Art Therapist Internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the integration of creative arts and therapeutic practices within a healthcare and social assistance setting. Interns will work closely with licensed art therapists and multidisciplinary teams to support clients in expressing emotions, processing trauma, and enhancing mental well-being through various art modalities. This role is designed to develop practical skills in assessment, treatment planning, and therapeutic intervention while fostering a compassionate and client-centered approach. The internship aims to prepare candidates for future professional roles by providing exposure to diverse populations and clinical environments. Ultimately, the intern will contribute to improving clients' emotional and psychological health by facilitating meaningful artistic expression and reflection.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a graduate program in art therapy, counseling, psychology, or a related field.
• Basic understanding of art therapy principles and therapeutic techniques.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a compassionate and empathetic demeanor.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional ethical standards.
• Willingness to commit to the full duration of the internship as specified by the program.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous experience volunteering or working in mental health, healthcare, or social service settings.
• Familiarity with diverse art materials and creative modalities including painting, drawing, and sculpture.
• Knowledge of trauma-informed care and culturally sensitive therapeutic practices.
• Basic skills in client assessment and documentation.
• Certification or coursework in mental health first aid or related areas.

Responsibilities:

• Assist licensed art therapists in conducting individual and group therapy sessions using various art techniques.
• Support the preparation and organization of therapeutic materials and creative activities tailored to client needs.
• Observe and document client progress, maintaining confidentiality and adhering to ethical guidelines.
• Participate in team meetings and case discussions to contribute insights and learn interdisciplinary approaches.
• Engage in reflective supervision and professional development activities to enhance therapeutic skills.

Skills:

The required and preferred skills are essential for effectively supporting therapeutic processes and client engagement. Communication skills enable the intern to build rapport with clients and collaborate with healthcare professionals. Knowledge of art therapy techniques allows the intern to assist in designing and facilitating creative interventions tailored to individual client needs. Organizational skills are used daily to prepare materials and document client progress accurately. Additionally, empathy and cultural sensitivity ensure that the intern provides respectful and inclusive support to diverse client populations, enhancing the overall therapeutic experience.
